The world number one made sure her name wasn't added to the list of top seed defeats by cruising past Frenchwomen Caroline Garcia 6-3 6-2.
"She is inspiring and she's so fit," Williams told BBC Sport. "I've never played her before, but I watched her when I was super young."
Williams will next play Japan's Kimiko Date-Krumm, the eldest person to the reach the third round of Wimbledon in the open era.
"I think Caroline's a really good player," added Williams. "I played her at the French Open and she played really well, so it was good to get another win today.
"I really love these moments when I'm out there. I live and die for these moments and it's really fun."
Despite her young age Garcia didn't appear to be nervous as she played her first match on centre court. The former junior number one battled hard in the second set.
Williams clinched her fist has she lead 4-2 in the concluding set, but Garcia swung a backhand wide giving the American victory.
