Home favourite Bernard Tomic was forced to retire from his first round match against Rafael Nadal following a leg injury.
It was the match that the Australian crowd and tv viewers had been waiting for, the young, fresh Bernard Tomic up against one of the most dominant forces in tennis, Rafael Nadal. The match certainly didn't meet expectations.
After trailing 4-6 in the first set, Tomic retired, allowing Rafael Nadal to move into the second round.
Both players were feeling the conditions of the excessive heat in Melbourne, but serving at 30-15 in the first game, the Australian started grimissing, looking down at his leg, and over to his box.
After just three games Tomic took a medical time out, returning with bandages strapped to his upper leg.
A few games later, and after more grimissing from Tomic, he ripped the bandages off his leg, seemingly more bothered by its presence rather than its absence. He still couldn't move freely, and Nadal definitely took advantage of the situation.
Nadal hit a forehand past Tomic to break serve in the ninth game, he served out the set.
In the second round the Spaniard will face another Australian, 17 year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis, whose game has been compared to Tomic's in the past.
