If anyone doubted Maria Sharapova's form going into the Australian Open, due to the world no.2 withdrawing from the Brisbane International at the fault of a neck injury, then many would have been proved wrong after Sharapova stormed to a 6-0 6-0 victory over Olga Puchkova.
Sharapova claimed victory in a comprehensive win in just 55 minutes at Melbourne Park against her fellow compatriot Olga Puchkova.
"I didn't want to focus on the fact I hadn't played a lot of matches," Sharapova said after the win.
"I just wanted to focus on just what was ahead of me and really concentrate and, you know, be aggressive. I also never faced her before ... so it was just one of those matches where I didn't try to worry about her too much."
Puchkova challenged Sharapova for a small spell in the opening service game of the second set as Puchkova nailed a forehand winner down the line to force deuce. But Sharapova served her way out of that game, and was continuously too consistent for the 25-year-old.
"Overall I was happy with the way I started, considering I didn't play any matches coming in," Sharapova added.
Sharapova hit six aces in the match and put in 68 per cent of first serves . She won an astonishing six of eight break points against Puchkova, capitilising on her opportunities. Great statistics for Sharapova who's form has been questioned of late.
