Mahut prevailed against the 2012 champion Lleyton Hewitt in a 5-7 7-5 6-3 victory in Newport.

“When you want to win a final, everything can happen. I just can’t believe it’s true,” said Mahut.

The Frenchman will now move back into the world top 100 following his victory and will add $78,000 to his bank account.

“A month ago I was playing to make the cut for the qualies at the US Open, I was ranked 240 with some points to defend. I told my coach, I have to play great on grass to make the cut for the qualies. A month later I have two titles,” he said.

At 5-4 in the second set Hewitt had the chance to serve for the match, but Mahut fought back with three straight games to keep his title hopes alive.

Mahut dropped serve in the third game of the final set, but he drew level at 3-3. He broke again to move to 5-3 against Hewitt and served out for the match and for the title winning in tour hours and 20 minutes.
