The world number three defeated the Croatian 6-4 6-2 6-4 to lead Croatia 3-1 in the best-of-five play-off.
Up next for Britain was Dan Evans, who recently broke into the world top 50, his good run of form continued after victory against Mate Pavic to clinch a 4-1 triumph for Great Britain.
The first round matches of the World Group begin in February where the 16 nations that qualified for the elite group will all play each other.
Spain will be joining Britain in the World Group after a 5-0 victory against Ukraine. Fernando Verdasco defeated Dolgopolov 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-2. Rafael Nadal enjoyed a 6-0 6-0 6-4 victory against Stakhovsky. In the doubles Nadal/Lopez defeated Molchanov/Stakhovsky 6-2 6-7 6-3 6-4. In the remaining two singles matches Verdasco won 6-2 6-1 against Manafov and Lopez clinched a 6-3 6-3 win over Molchanov.
The Netherlands rallied to a 5-0 victory against Austria:
- Haase won 6-4 6-3 6-1 against Marach
- De Bakker defeated Melzer 5-7 7-5 5-7 6-4 6-1
- In the doubles Haase/Rojer won 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-5 against Knowle/Marach
- Huta Galung defeated Melzer 3-6 7-5 6-3
- De Bakker was due to play Marach but the Austrian conceded victory.
Switzerland will be joining Spain, Britain and The Netherlands after a 4-1 triumph against Ecuador:

- Chiudinelli d. Campozano 3-6 6-1 6-3 7-6
- Lammer/Wawrinka d. Gomez/Quiroz 6-3 6-4 3-6 6-7 6-4

Germany defeated Brazil 4-1, Australia clinched a 4-1 victory over Poland. The result against Belgium and Israel was closer but the Belgians emerged 3-2 and it was the same score for Japan who qualify for the World Group after defeating Colombia.
