David Ferrer has reached the quarter-finals of a grand slam for the ninth time in a row after defeating Florian Mayer.
After a nervy first two sets for the Spaniard, the consistent Ferrer eventually pulled through to take a 6-7 7-5 6-2 6-1 win over Germany's Florian Mayer.
Widely described as one of the tours hardest workers, Ferrer wore Mayer down from the backcourt at Hisense Arena. At first Mayer was able to stay with Ferrer in the rallies and even picked up the pace which surprised the number three seed. However, in the third set Ferrer was in another league. He began to settle down and the dominant Ferrer shone through.
Ferrer served much more effectively in comparison to the German, winning 74 per cent of his first serve points, while Mayer could only manage to take 55 per cent of his own.
The world number three will face Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
