The defence of Williams Wimbledon crown began with a clear victory over Mandy Minella, after a slight fight back from Minella in the second set Williams pulled through 6-1 6-3.
The top seed rushed through the first set, allowing the ranked 92 player only one game on the board.
In the second set Minella appeared to fight back breaking Williams in the second game of the concluding set. But Serena showed why she is number one and raced to victory to advance to the second round.
Following the match Williams told BBC Sport: "I played so much on clay this year it meant the grass transition was harder than I expected."
