The young American was dominant throughout the match and deserved the win to advance to the second round 6-3 7-5.
Keys showed her youthfulness by giving away too many points due to inconsistency, but an issue she can resolve as she refines her game.
Watson, who has only recently returned to the game after suffering from Glandular Fever, came out fighting after losing the first set. Keys performance dipped only slightly and Watson pounced on this opportunity.
For a few games it seemed Watson could take the second set but Keys fast moving pace and world class serve brought her back level on five games all.
The momentum which was with Keys throughout the game built up even more in the closing stages of the match, forcing errors from Watson.
Madison was now had 3 match reports, one of which Heather saved. But the last ball served by Madison clipped the net and Watson didn't make it to the net on time.
