The Swiss player, seeded seventh, won his semi-final match against Berdych 6-3 6-7 7-6 7-6, to reach his major final in 36 attempts.
The second semi-final takes place tomorrow between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, the prospect of an all Swiss final is in the air.
Wawrinka said: "It's amazing, I'm so happy to be here.
I didn't expect to make a final in a Grand Slam."
"It would be amazing," said Wawrinka of
potentially playing Federer in Sunday's final. "Roger is the best player
ever. He texted me last night. He is happy it is the first time two Swiss guys
are in the semi-finals. I told him for you it's normal, for me it's not normal.
After a successful 2013 when the 28-year-old reached the US Open semi-finals, Wawrinka has made a great start to 2014 by making his first major final.
"The match was extremely even and it was really so
close," said Berdych.
"It's really hard to find what could be the difference.
We both played great. We played a good match. Stan was the one that just took
it, and that's it."
Berdych was the first to falter, smashing a towering lob into the tramlines on the first break point of the match and dropping the set in the following game.
The Czech saved a break point in the second set before taking charge of the tie-break, the momentum seemed to be with Berdych at this point in the third set but he couldn't convert his first chance on Wawrinka's serve at 4-4.
We were into tie-break number two, where this time Wawrinka was in charge after two double faults from Berdych gave him the lead at 3-2.
Berdych looked vulnerable in the fourth set, narrowly escaping a break point after three double-faults in the opening game.
It all came down to a third tie-break, most of the crowd were behind Wawrinka following his epic clash with Djokovic on Tuesday, this helped the Swiss player step up a gear.
Wawrinka was given two match points, the Swiss double-faulted on the first but saw Berdych fire long over the the baseline on the second to book his place in the Melbourne final.
