Li Na beat Belinda Bencic 6-0 7-6 (7-5)
The fourth seed appeared to be in a rush in the opening set as she didn't let her opponent get a game on the board.
It was a different story in the second set as Bencic broke serve twice to mount some sort of challenge.
However, two-time finalist Li evidently had the third round in her sight, the fourth seed hit back instantly before winning the tie-break. She will be back in action on Friday.
Sam Stosur beat Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2 6-0
Home crowd favourite Stosur was in a class of her own up, against a Bulgarian who was on a nine match winning streak.
The 17th seed looked comfortable out on court, rallying to victory in just one hour and 17 minutes.
"I feel great," Stosur said. "Really happy
with the way that I played. She started out pretty well. But I feel like I was
finding my range pretty well and felt good and was moving well.
David Ferrer beat Adrian Mannarino 7-6 5-7 6-0 6-3
Although the scoreboard shows a Ferrer win, it fails to tell the story of how Mannarino, ranked 71 in the world, mounted a challenge that the Spaniard found difficult to overcome.
“It was tough to play in these conditions,” said Ferrer,
“but it was the same for both players.”
Ferrer was reined in during the first set, but the third seed was eventual winner of the tie-break. In the second set performances appeared more equal. When at 5-6, Ferrer failed to cope with sublime volleys from the Frenchman to lose his serve to love, and the set 7-5.
From then on the momentum swung Ferrer's way, his fighting spirit shone through. Mannarino did keep up for a few games but he simply couldn't cope with the Spaniards unrelenting pressure.
