Nineteen-year-old Canadian Eugenie Bouchard rolls through American Lauren Davis easily 6-2, 6-2. She moves on to the Round of 16 of major for the first time in her young career.
I've heard the term "up-and-comer" thrown around a lot at the Australian Open referring to the young Canadian Eugenie Bouchard. But based on how she's played in this tournament so far, I'd say she's a force to be reckoned with NOW.
Genie Bouchard came into the Aussie Open as the 30th seed and the 31st ranked player in the world. In a little over a year Genie raised her ranking from 147 to 31. In was only a matter of time that the 19-year-old made a nice run in a major. From the beginning her draw looked favorable, and seeing both (7) Sara Errani and (12) Roberta Vinci fall in the first round only strengthened her chances at making a run here in Melbourne.
Genie won her first two matches in straight sets, setting up a third round match with the modestly sized American Lauren Davis. From the get-go Genie looked to be in charge converting three break points in the first set compared to Davis's one, winning the set 6-2. The second set looked much the same, as Genie took that set as well 6-2. Genie dictated the points from beginning to end, putting the American on her heels throughout the match.
Through three matches Eugenie Bouchard hasn't dropped a single set, and has yet to really be tested (aside from that close 12-10 second set tie-break Bouchard needed to beat Virginie Razzano in the second round). She has a more-than-manageable Round of 16 match-up with Australian veteran Casey Dellacqua. If she beats Dellacqua it will set up a probable quarterfinal showdown with Serena Williams. Let's take it one step at time though.
This has been Eugenie Bouchard's best showing at a major in her young career. She has been turning heads all tournament so far for both her impressive tennis play and her stunning looks. The beautiful young Canadian is showing great promise and she's showing it NOW. A quarterfinal here in Melbourne would be a nice way to begin the year for Genie, and is not only possible but, dare I say, probable. We expect many more performances like this Australian Open performance in years to come for Eugenie Bouchard. She's definitely a stock you want in on.
