Tomas Berdych has been lights out all tournament. Coming into his Quarter Final matchup with Spaniard David Ferrer, Berdych had yet to drop a single service game.
He had a tough ask last night when he faced off with David Ferrer. Ferrer had beaten Berdych seven of the past eleven meetings. The seems made it seem as if a Berdych win would be an upset (as would most seven seeds beating a three seed would be), but Berdych has looked sharp all tournament and no one really treated Berdych as the underdog in this match.
Berdych jumped to a quick start, dominating play and took the first two sets quite handily 6-1 and 6-4. Ferrer bounced back in the third set, agitating the Czech man more than he had in the first two sets, eventually taking the third set 6-2. But Berdych proved to be too tough for the Spaniard taking the fourth set and the match 6-1, 6-4,2-6, 6-4.
With the win Berdych has made his first Australian Open semifinal and is the first Czech player to reach a semi in Melbourne since 2002 (Jiri Novak). He will face Stanislas Wawrinka, who took down 3-time defending champ Novak Djokovic in another thrilling 5-set match. With the way Stan is playing this is no easy match for Tomas, but I'm pretty sure Tomas is quite fine the opponent he got stuck with (given Berdych's struggles against Djokovic and the other top caliber players. He'll take his chances with Stan.
After his match, Tomas tweeted "I('m) starting to taste it..." Yes, you are Tomas. He'll have a shot at making his first Aussie final on Thursday when he takes on Wawrinka.
