The Spaniard put in a dominant performance has he took part in his 12th consecutive Australian Open and 45th consecutive major tournament.
Both players were at two very different points in their careers. Gonzalez only recently entered the top 100, and playing for the first time a player in the top 50. On the other hand you have Ferrer, the third seed, and semi-finalist at this event last year.
Ferrer eventually won the match 6-3 6-4 6-4, a good straight sets win to kick off his campaign at the Australian Open.
Following the match Ferrer told the press: “It was tough match, in the second and third sets I was a
few breaks down … (But) in important moments I can win,” he said on court
following the match.
“Nice to come back (to the Australian Open), sure. (Coming)
back playing in centre court it’s very nice for myself. I’m No.3 (seed) but
it’s just one number. It’s a new season and I want to be focused on my next
opponent.”
Ferrer will take on Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the second round.
